What is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is the process of mixing seed, fertilizer, mulch, tackifiers, and amendments with water to form a slurry that is sprayed onto a prepared seedbed to establish vegetation and control erosion.

Materials are specifically blended for each project in a truck or trailer-mounted tank with a mechanical agitation system.

This process keeps all products uniformly suspended in a homogenous slurry until applied.

We can customize any combination of seed, fertilizer, hydroseeding mulch, lime, tackifier, soil-enhancing media, seed stimulants, and moisture retention co-polymers to meet the needs of the existing site conditions.

Application of hydroseeding can include, but is not limited to:

  • Turf grasses, conservation & slope mixes

  • Pasture and wildflower mixes

  • Fertilizer blends

  • Fiber mulch, bonded fiber matrix (BFM), and Flexterra FGM

  • Proganics Biotic Soil Media (BSM)

  • Jump Start (soil enhancer & growth stimulant)

  • Aqua gel (moisture retention co-polymer)

  • Neutra lime

ProGanics BSM as an alternative to topsoil:

ProGanics Biotic Soil Media (BSM) accelerates the development of depleted soils or substrates with low organic matter, low nutrient levels, and limited biological activity. It is a combination of recycled Thermally-Refined® bark and wood fibers, with a proprietary blend of biopolymers, biochar, seaweed extract, humic acid, endomycorrhizae, beneficial bacteria, and other soil-building constituents.

The naturally occurring bark and wood fibers used to produce ProGanics BSM are natural, non-toxic, and safe for the environment, and have been phyto-sanitized to eliminate potential weed seeds and pathogens.

ProGanics BSM synergistically creates a holistic solution to improve agronomic potential in the rhizosphere – the region in the vicinity of plant roots where soil chemistry and microbiology are influenced by growth, respiration, and nutrient exchange. All components of ProGanics BSM are naturally derived and engineered to optimize moisture retention, fostering both rapid and sustained vegetation establishment.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Proper watering is the most important step to ensure a great lawn. Water 2-3 times a day for 15-20 minutes each time during the first couple of weeks to keep the seed and soil moist.

The amount and timing may vary depending on soil conditions, slope, and weather. Fiber mulch turns a lighter color in areas starting to dry out. This helps identify which areas get more sun and need more water.

As your new lawn matures, you can reduce the amount and frequency of watering.

  • A starter fertilizer was applied to stimulate root growth when your new lawn was hydroseeded. This is important in the early stages of development.

You may apply more fertilizer 3 to 4 weeks after germination. The kind of fertilizer you select will depend on where in the growing season the application will take place.

It is not recommended to use a weed and feed during the first 3 months.

  • It is recommended to wait until the grass reaches 3 to 4 inches before the first mowing, then cut to about 2.5 to 3 inches.

Try not to cut any more than 1/3 of the blade length at any one mowing.

A conservative mowing approach is recommended for the first 2 or 3 mowings. Then gradually lower your cutting deck following the 1/3 rule to the desired height once the turf is fully established.
